What Are Dental Implants?

Although dental implants are commonly viewed as tooth replacements, they are actually one of three parts that make up an artificial tooth. As the titanium post mimics a natural root, it creates the foundation that supports a customized crown, bridge, or denture. Its placement in the jawbone allows for permanence and increased longevity – something many patients find most beneficial.

The 4-Step Dental Implant Process

Four steps must be completed for dental implants to be successful: the initial consultation, dental implant surgery, osseointegration and abutment placement, and the delivery of the final restoration. While Dr. Osterhoudt places around 60% of all dental implants, our in-house oral surgeon may place more complex cases.

  • Initial Dental Implant Consultation - You will meet with Dr. Osterhoudt to discuss your oral and overall health. He’ll also evaluate your jawbone density to determine if it’s capable of supporting your new restoration.
  • Dental Implant Surgery - Our team includes an in-house oral surgeon, allowing us to completely eliminate the need for referrals outside of the office for dental implant placement. Not only does this mean you’ll be able to enjoy the best possible results, but this detail will also make your overall journey more convenient.
  • Dental Implant Osseointegration / Abutment - After surgery, you will be expected to follow precise aftercare instructions so that osseointegration occurs and is successful. This is the process of your dental implants fusing with your jawbone. After you are healed, you will receive your metal abutments, which help hold your restoration in place.
  • Delivery of Dental Implant Restoration(s) - Before you can begin enjoying your new dental implants, you’ll need to have your custom bridge, denture, or crown put into place. We’ll make sure it looks natural, feels comfortable, and works correctly.
